As with any military service, you will start with basic training. Training consists of military courtesies, drills and ceremonies, military conduct, leadership, seamanship, uniforms, ranks and rates, career development, first aid and survival, fitness, wellness and quality of life, Coast Guard history, traditions, and values, safety, damage control, small arms, Coast Guard assets and missions. The Coast Guard Reserve does have the means of delivering quality training opportunities remotely through electronic-based distance learning (EBDL), sometimes called correspondence courses. These remote courses provide training from the Emergency Management Institute, Defense Acquisition University, and several other war colleges.
The US Coast Guard took possession of the school in and established the Reserve Training Center or RTC. The purpose of the RTC was to become the home of Coast Guard Officer Candidate School (which moved to the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT in ) and formally as a large summer training program for : Coast Guard.
